PK 3 and PK 4 - What is a Multi-Age Classroom?

A multi-age classroom includes children of more than one age level or grade.  In our PK program, we welcome students who have turned 3 or 4 by September 1.  We believe in a developmental, child-centered approach to engaging children in curriculum and authentic learning experiences. We all develop and learn at different paces. We believe multi-age classroom models honor the whole-child and allow for greater flexibility and differentiation in meeting children’s needs, especially during the early childhood phase. A multi-age classroom provides a safe, nurturing space for children to develop academic skills as well as social-emotional skills.

When there are children of different age groups, they look out for each other as their needs are  different and they are not competing for the same thing. The older ones take care of the younger and the younger ones learn to look up to their older peers.  The multi-age classroom also allows for flexible differentiation of instruction for students of both levels so that students receive individualized attention, appropriate enrichment, and timely instruction in all early childhood skills.

"I'm the mother of a fourth grader who has been with SPAS since PK.  From our first year to date, it's been a loving family bond.  We are truly blessed to be a part of the SPAS family."

PK 3 and PK 4 - Our Philosophy

It is the philosophy of our early childhood program that children should be encouraged to learn and grow by providing a foundation of developmentally appropriate experiences where all children can succeed in a safe and nurturing environment.

We believe that each child is unique. Our program recognizes children’s varied abilities, interests, needs, and learning styles. Research shows that children learn best through play. Meaningful play encourages curiosity, discovery, and problem solving which allows positive growth and development of a child’s sense of self. Our child centered program reflects the integration of physical, cognitive, social, emotional, language, and self-help for the total development of the child.

We recognize that parents are the child’s first teachers. We feel children learn best when parents are involved in their child’s educational growth and we are eager to partner with parents.
